Spring Plant Sale and Composting Fundraiser
Deanna McBeath, MS Science Teacher
Support our new composting program at Bernard Zell and the hardworking members of the BZ Jewish Youth Climate Movement (JYCM) who are making it happen! All year, our earnest young environmentalists have been learning about ways we can take action to better care for the Earth. Led by Beth Sanzenbacher, the 7th and 8th grade JYCM researched and arranged for a composting service, Collective Resource, to recycle food waste from our school lunches from April 4 through the end of the school year. We fill one 48 gallon tote with food scraps a day at school – that’s a lot of waste we’re diverting! The climate crisis is getting worse, and creating fertilizer with our scraps can help the planet and reduce the amount of food we are sending into the landfill.
Meanwhile, the 5th and 6th grade JYCM, led by Deanna McBeath, has been busy planting seeds, propagating plants, and planning a plant sale to help raise the funds for this initiative. Our goal is to raise $1100 to cover the cost of composting until the end of the year, $20 pays for one 32 gallon composting tote for one day and $100 covers a full week.
Plants are being sold in person right after school Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-4:00 p.m. on the Plaza, while inventory lasts.

Available plants include:
Herbs (2" Dill, Chives, Mint, Thyme, Parsley, Basil, Oregano, Cilantro): $3 each or 3 for $8
