Senior Kindergarten is in Full Bloom!
Andrea Raskin, SK Jewish Studies Teacher

SK’s  שקדיה shkeidia (almond) tree has bloomed! The students sang the song השקדיה פורחת HaShkeidia Porachat for weeks, preparing to celebrate ט"ו בשבט Tu B’Shevat. This song tells us that when the almond tree blooms, Tu B’Shevat has arrived. The SK students kept busy preparing for the birthday of the trees by focusing on the importance of trees and taking care of the environment. Recyclable materials, scrap paper and backs of papers were used in all of the projects created during our study. They built trees from items rescued from the recycling bin and made collages from magazine pictures of beautiful things G-d created. They learned about the seven species of foods that are mentioned in the Torah: wheat, barley, pomegranates, dates, figs, olives and grapes (vines) and tasted all but barley at our Tu B’Shevat seder. They also decorated pots and planted parsley that should be ready to use for the Pesach seder. The students had a great time celebrating all of the wonderful things that trees bring to the world!
