Second Graders Learn the Value of the Vote in Social Studies
Lori Deradoorian, 2nd Grade Teacher
In Ms. Deradoorian's second grade class, students are learning the value of the vote in Social Studies. First, they learned about the various branches of government and are currently in the midst of primaries. To gain a better understanding of our judicial system and how voting works, students were given the opportunity to vote for their favorite books. They then divided the 'candidates' into four categories or genres:
  • Mystery
  • Biography
  • Graphic Novels
  • Fairy Tales
Students are using brackets to narrow the field for their final two candidates and all three classes will vote for the "president." So far, the fairy tales genre is in the lead with The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and Whoosh! by Lonnie Johnson won for best biography. If you have a second grader, be sure to ask them about their experience with voting and the last two remaining winners in the graphic novels and fairy tales.
