📝 Reading and Writing Poetry in 6th Grade
Jamie Wendt, Humanities Teacher
April is National Poetry Month, and the 6th graders are enthusiastically diving into the world of poetry. In Reading Workshop, they are reading popular middle-grade novels-in-verse with a reading partner, while analyzing the poetic craft and style as well as motifs and the larger meaning of poems. In Writing Workshop, students are drafting original poems by studying mentor texts and imitating the poetic style, form, and/or content.
So far, students have written free verse poems, haikus, persona poems, odes, and tankas. As the unit continues, they will also learn to write pantoums, ekphrastic poetry, and blackout poetry. The students are showing off their creative thinking by incorporating similes, metaphors, imagery, and other literary devices they have learned into their poems.
After revising and editing their poems, the 6th graders will create mini poetry collections of their work. Each student will have a poem featured in the upcoming Arts & Humanities Festival Poetry Gallery located in the Dream Space, and some 6th graders will recite their poems during the Festival’s morning performance (Morton & Zelda Reisman Music Festival) as well.
