Out of this World Learning in 202
Emily Maude, Lower School General Studies Teacher
Our 3rd grade class blasted off on an exciting learning adventure focused on outer space and the Apollo 11 mission. After reading Moonshot by Brian Floca, students explored the historic journey to the moon and identified what they believed was the most wonderful or most dangerous moment of the mission. Using details from the text and strong transition words, students planned, drafted, revised, and published their writing, bringing history and literacy together in a meaningful way.
Students also stepped into the role of astronauts by writing creative, first-person stories inspired by Moonshot and One Giant Leap. Their stories followed a mission to the moon and included accurate rocket and mission stages, vivid sensory details, figurative language, and unit vocabulary. Many students described how their astronaut felt during launch, landing, and even while walking on the moon.
As we wrap up Module 2, students will take their learning even further by choosing an outer space topic they are curious about and creating a persuasive opinion presentation. In this final project, students will imagine they are pitching their idea to a science museum, convincing curators why their topic should be added to a space exhibit. This exciting challenge encourages research, creativity, and strong speaking skills while allowing students to follow their own interests.
