Our Favorite Time of Year: Roller Skating!
Ashley Johnson, Physical Education Teacher
The roller skating and roller blading PE unit is back at Bernard Zell, and it remains a crowd favorite! From the first day of school, PE teachers across all grades get asked the same question: “When is roller skating?” The excitement leading up to this time of year is unmatched.
All students from Senior Kindergarten - 8th grade began the unit on January 26 and will continue through February 13. Students in Senior Kindergarten - 3rd grade will work on their roller skating skills while 4th - 8th grade will advance into roller blading.
Throughout the unit, students learn and review essential skills such as falling safely, stopping, and skating. For some students, this is their very first time getting up on roller skates or blades. For others, they do laps around the gym with no fear. No matter what the skill level, smiles are seen in every class!
In addition to skill-building, students participate in a variety of games. Lower school classes enjoy favorites such as Four Corners, Red Light Green Light, and Disco Skating. Middle School students take part in activities including Limbo, Time Trials, and Quidditch.
Students in 8th grade have had the opportunity to help students in Senior Kindergarten - 2nd grade through the Bernard Zell buddy program. Eighth graders go to their “buddy” class and encourage younger students to keep working hard and give them skill tips all while helping them improve their confidence. Watching our oldest students step into leadership roles with younger grades is a highlight of the unit.
We’ve had so much fun during these three weeks. While we are sad to see the unit come to an end, we can already start the countdown for next year!.
