Mr. Mather Launches Middle School #DistanceLearningChallenge
Josh Mather, Middle School Music Teacher

They say that boredom activates creativity in the brain. In order to be able to create something, our brains have to slow down and be allowed to daydream. In fact, I was talking to my brother the other day and he told me that calculus was invented during a pandemic — wow! In addition, many artists of all disciplines throughout the years have found the need to retreat for some time to allow the space for creative thought.

With this in mind, I am launching the middle school #distancelearningchallenge from Monday, March 30 - Tuesday, April 7. I am encouraging students to create a musical parody of their experience with distance learning. This is a chance for students to have fun, do some creative problem solving and collaborate across grades to come up with something truly unique. I have also been in contact with some other music teachers via Facebook who are interested in participating.

Students may upload their work to the BZ Connect discussion assignment, as well as their favorite video platform. Don't forget to use #distancelearningchallenge so they can connect with others who are doing the same.

My hope is that we can use this to connect with each other and others in the community to bring some joy and creativity to this time that we have.

Have fun!
