Middle School Students Express Creative Ideas in Performing Arts
Brandon Becker, Performing Arts Director
In 5th and 6th-grade performing arts, students have spent the months of March and April exploring all of the areas in theatre that are considered "behind the scenes". Each week, students heard from designers and other professionals about their job responsibilities and then tackled designing various projects for one of two imaginary plays: A version of The Three Little Pigs set in Hawaii with a circus theme or a play called Natural centered around a tree-dwelling clan that are trying to save their forest from a robot invasion.
Students had the opportunity to express their creative ideas through costume designs, set designs and poster designs. Several of these projects enabled them to learn how to be resourceful and use materials they had around their house to create props and creative hairstyles!
All of this work prepares them for their 7th-grade play and 8th-grade operetta when each student chooses a position behind the scenes and helps design or create their show!
