Our children showed great excitement in creating their own stores! After brainstorming familiar places like Target, Costco, and toy stores, they opened a Tattoo & Stamp Shop. Using marbles and dominoes as currency, they practiced setting prices, counting items, and collecting payment.
The children’s play naturally supported early numeracy skills—including one-to-one correspondence, comparing quantities, and recognizing that numbers represent amounts. These experiences connect directly to Illinois Early Learning Standards, where children explore number sense and begin to understand simple operations through real-world play.
As their excitement grew, they opened an Orange Juice Stand—making fresh juice together—and even a Shabbat Store selling Judaica. With teacher support, they organized roles, created signage, and eagerly carried out transactions, showing how meaningful play can spark both imagination and mathematical thinking.
