Forty-Three New Adventures Begin at Bernard Zell Middle School
Ms. Amend, Middle School Math Teacher
The halls of Bernard Zell Middle School are buzzing with fresh energy as 43 students, the Class of 2029, have started their middle school journey. Though it’s only been 21 days since they officially became middle schoolers, you’d never guess it from watching them in action. They’ve hit the ground running, adapting to new routines, navigating class changes, meeting new teachers, and embracing the challenges (and excitement!) of this next chapter.
So, how’s it really going? We asked them! Here’s what the newest members of our Bernard Zell Middle School community had to say about their experience so far.
What is the best part of Middle School?
There is a lot more responsibility, but pretty much everything is great about Middle School. It is fun getting to move from class to class and not sit in one class all day. It is fun to have different teachers and passing periods between classes. Recess is great because we get the whole field to ourselves. It is fun to be more free.
What actions have you taken to be successful in adjusting to Middle School? What else has been helpful in making the transition?
I have kept an open mind and worked to not get overwhelmed. The adjustments include moving around a lot and traveling with materials. There is a lot more to remember. Having friends around has been helpful and made getting to class on time easier. There are lots of helpful and awesome teachers who work to make sure we are prepared and set up for success.
How is building community a part of the Middle School experience?
We are learning to work well with people with many group projects. We made posters in social studies about the six elements and have been playing games in other classes. Community is also built in because we get to hang out with other people during passing periods, Specials, and recess. During Gibush (advisory) we do lots of sharing and play games together to establish community.
What concerns did you have at the start of Middle School that you have found easier than you expected? If you could tell your 4th grade self something that would ease concerns, worries, anxieties related to Middle School, what would be your advice?
I was worried about all the school work. So far, I have found out it is not that hard. I would tell a 4th grader not to worry about passing periods, and when you are permitted to get drinks and have bathroom breaks. You can do all of those things in 5th grade.
What is an example of how a class you had in Lower School is different in Middle School? What new classes are you enjoying?
Drama is a new class. A class, like music, that we had in Lower School is just harder. For example, we are doing a body percussion unit and using our bodies to make songs. We didn’t do this before. It is pretty fun, but kind of hard.
