⛺ Extreme Settings
Candice Brauer, 4th Grade General Studies Teacher
Over the past few weeks, our fourth graders have been diving deep into their Wit & Wisdom curriculum, exploring the challenges and adaptations necessary for survival in extreme settings. While honing their reading and writing skills, they have also developed a greater appreciation for how people and animals endure harsh environments.
One particularly exciting project has been the creation of hiking brochures. Students applied their knowledge of extreme environments to design informative and engaging guides for adventurers. Their brochures include key survival tips, descriptions of the terrain and climate, and practical advice for explorers. This project allowed students to synthesize information creatively while practicing research and writing skills in a real-world format.
Students are now focusing on writing their own survival narratives set in mountainous environments. This assignment challenges them to imagine being lost on a mountain and to detail their survival journey, applying their understanding of extreme settings. It not only assesses their grasp of narrative writing but also their ability to synthesize and apply survival knowledge.
