🎭 Exploring Change Through Wit & Wisdom
Ms. Deradoorian, 2nd Grade General Studies Teacher
Second Graders are fully engaged with our new literacy program, Wit & Wisdom! This dynamic curriculum combines reading and writing skills while immersing students in art, science, and social studies. With each new painting or text, we "Notice & Wonder," making predictions based on titles and images to spark our curiosity. We read and reread books, observing the many changes happening in nature.
Our current unit focuses on the theme of change, using the fall season as our setting. Together, we’re exploring how birds, butterflies, squirrels, people, and plants respond to the cooling weather. We have studied paintings and read both non-fiction and narrative books to deepen our understanding. To build fluency, students practice reading passages aloud, and these selections may be familiar to their families by now!
Our writing exercises help students craft paragraphs that start with clear topic sentences, followed by three supporting sentences, each backed with evidence from the texts. We're also using an editing checklist to ensure they include all necessary elements. In addition to reading and writing, the program introduces new vocabulary and parts of speech. A class favorite is acting out action verbs—bringing learning to life in a fun and memorable way!
