🪸 Creature Feature: Exploring Animals’ Unique Adaptations
Ms. Wineburgh, Lower School Teacher
In our second Wit and Wisdom module, Creature Feature, students explored how animals’ unique features help them thrive and reproduce. Our guiding essential question for this unit was: What can we discover about animals’ unique features?
We began by reading Sea Horses: The Shyest Fish in the Sea, learning how seahorses’ heads, eyes, pouches, and tails help them survive. To deepen our understanding, we compared these features to those of more familiar animals and analyzed text features within the book. Students then wrote their first informative paragraphs about seahorse adaptations, practicing how to craft a well-organized paragraph with a clear topic sentence, two to three supporting details, and a conclusion that ties everything together.
Next, we read What Would You Do with a Tail Like This?, which examines how different animals use similar features in unique ways. Students selected an animal feature, researched two animals that possess it, and wrote another informative paragraph comparing their adaptations. They then illustrated their work, drawing inspiration from the painting Young Hare and exploring texture techniques using Drawing Pad. This project culminated in the creation of our class book, Creature Features. Click here to read our book!
Finally, we studied Never Smile at a Monkey, discussing how animals might react to humans and how we can protect ourselves. Students analyzed the author’s purpose and practiced writing conclusions that reinforce the main idea. We also explored alliteration and how it enhances rhythm in writing.
For a fun final project, students researched animals and created trading cards featuring their chosen species. They also built models of their animals using loose parts. To showcase their learning, students presented their trading cards and models to the class, practicing their public speaking skills.
