🌳 Connecting our Jewish Values to Tu B'Shevat
Lori Deradoorian, 2nd Grade General Studies Teacher
In second grade, our Jewish value is Teshuvah, תשובה (return from doing wrong), we do better when we know better and we work hard to make things right. Teshuvah is about changing and growing and making things better. We dug deeper into this value through the study of Tu B'Shevat, ט״ו בשבט (the celebration of the trees.)
In groups, we researched the seven Israeli species: figs, grapes, dates, olives, pomegranate, wheat and barley. Students created posters in English and in Hebrew with information about one of the seven species to teach the rest of the class. Second graders used a 3D printer to create the fruit they were researching. We made many connections between Teshuvah and Tu B'Shevat. One being by taking care of the earth and repairing the earth, we can help improve the environment. Through this project, second graders now know the importance of trees and will continue to learn about recycling and reusing items before putting them into the landfill.
