🌊 Connecting Geography to Climate Solutions
Ms. Thompson and Ms. Milner-Gorvine, Middle School Teachers
In 5th grade social studies this year, the primary focus has been on geography, providing students with a foundational understanding of the world around them. Beyond core geographical concepts, we've explored various interconnected topics through mini-units, including trade dynamics, the different levels and branches of government, and the significance of current events in shaping our global landscape. These units have helped students see how society and the environment are interconnected.
Our class is currently engaged in a unit on climate change, specifically examining the global impact of fire and water issues. We've brought this topic close to home by focusing on local concerns surrounding rising water levels in Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Students are learning about these specific water challenges and are now writing persuasive letters to a politician of their choice, advocating for concrete actions to mitigate our city's water issues.
