Another memorable night celebrating Bernard Zell Athletics is officially in the books—and like every great sports season, the banquet somehow managed to be equal parts celebration, reflection, laughter, pride, and just enough emotion to remind everyone why school sports matter so much in the first place.

The evening was filled with incredible highlights, beginning with the recognition of two students whose impact on Bernard Zell Athletics goes far beyond statistics or scoreboards.

Congratulations to Lila Shashoua, recipient of the Matt Rieger Character Award, an honor that represents leadership, kindness, integrity, resilience, and the type of teammate every coach hopes to have in a program. Lila has represented Bernard Zell with tremendous heart and positivity, and receiving an award connected to Coach Matt Rieger’s legacy made the moment especially meaningful.

Congratulations as well to Lincoln Altman, winner of the David Stiefel Spirit Award, recognizing the energy, enthusiasm, encouragement, and school spirit that help make teams—and communities—stronger. Every athletic department needs competitors. The truly special ones also have people who lift everyone around them simply by showing up exactly as themselves every single day. Lincoln has done exactly that.

The banquet also celebrated several outstanding team accomplishments from another incredibly successful year for Bernard Zell Athletics:

• The JV Girls Volleyball team captured a championship and brought home a 1st-place trophy after an outstanding season filled with teamwork, growth, and consistency.

• The 8th Grade Boys Basketball team earned a thrilling 3rd-place finish, bringing home the program’s first varsity boys basketball trophy since 2022. Over the course of the winter, the group battled, improved, persevered, and delivered countless exciting moments along the way.

• The Girls Soccer program added yet another championship trophy to an already impressive tradition of success, once again proving themselves to be one of the premier programs in the league.

Of course, while trophies are wonderful (and significantly shinier after polishing them for banquet tables), the evening served as a reminder that athletics are ultimately about much more than wins and losses.

This year we celebrated 31 unique and talented 8th-grade student-athletes who have represented Bernard Zell with passion, determination, pride, and resilience throughout their middle school careers. Some played one sport. Some played nearly every season possible. Some discovered new confidence through athletics. Some became leaders. Some became the loudest bench supporters imaginable. All of them helped shape the culture of Bernard Zell Athletics.

Together, they leave behind an incredible legacy.

These student-athletes competed fiercely, supported one another fully, and represented the Eagles with tremendous pride, both on and off the court, field, and volleyball floor. They will go on to play many sports in high school and beyond, and there is no doubt they will continue making the Bernard Zell community proud in everything they do.

The banquet also reflected on the moments that never appear in standings or final scores but somehow become the memories everyone keeps the longest:
The early morning practices.
The bus rides.
The postgame snack debates.
The frantic uniform searches five minutes before warmups.
The comeback victories.
The difficult losses.
The friendships formed between teammates who may not otherwise have crossed paths.
The confidence gained slowly over time.
The realization that being part of a team means belonging to something bigger than yourself.

That is the real heartbeat of school athletics.

From the first volleyball serve in the fall to the final spring contests that somehow arrive far too quickly every year, Bernard Zell student-athletes continued to represent the school community with extraordinary effort, fair play, enthusiasm, and heart.

To all of our coaches, families, and student-athletes: thank you for another unforgettable year.

And to our graduating 8th graders — thank you for the memories, the leadership, the laughter, the competitiveness, the commitment, and the example you set for younger Eagles who now look forward to following in your footsteps.
