🌿 6th Graders Build Community & Connect with Nature on Overnight Trip
6th Grade Team
On Wednesday, November 13, the BZ 6th grade class boarded a bus and headed to the beautiful camp, OSRUI, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. After settling into our rooms and enjoying a delicious taco bar lunch, we tested our climbing skills on a high ropes course in the woods. Local fire fighters guided us, helping some of us overcome our fear of heights. We also participated in team-building activities in the camp’s gym and played basketball.
Later in the afternoon, we gathered in small groups for a cooking class, where we chopped and mixed ingredients to make a tasty Israeli salad. At dinner, we celebrated two student birthdays with cake and then set off on a brisk night hike around camp. That evening, we came together in the camp’s outdoor pavilion for the annual “Project Runway” event. Using only colorful duct tape and plastic garbage bags, the students designed and modeled creative, funny outfits for the show. Each model strutted down the fashion runway to music of their choice, while their student designers shared their group’s creative themes.
On Thursday morning after breakfast, we learned about artists who create sculptures using natural elements. Students created their own works of art from colorful leaves, sticks, and stones found around the campgrounds, connecting to Jewish values like kehillah (community). We enjoyed a day of sunshine and outdoor activities with Hi-Five Sports, engaging in team-building games, which included wearing blindfolds and relying on their teammates to guide them around obstacles. Another game, See-Run-Build, emphasized the importance of communication and teamwork. By late afternoon, downtime was much needed, and we used it to rehearse for our famous 6th Grade Talent Show. Did you know that we have exceptional singers, dancers, comedians, and riddle-tellers? We wrapped up the day with a cozy bonfire and s’mores, followed by a night hike to observe constellations.
On Friday morning after breakfast, we learned a catchy Israeli children’s song and choreographed a dance to accompany it. Then we headed outside for a game of Sharks and Minnows with the whole grade. Before boarding the bus back to school, we circled up to reflect on our experiences, sharing what we had learned about ourselves and how we may have grown during the trip.
Student reflections included:
  • “I learned about talents I didn’t know people in our class had.”
  • “We should always try new things and enjoy what is happening in the moment.”
  • “I am proud that I tried the high ropes course even though I was scared.”
  • "I liked becoming closer friends with my classmates.”
