🦅🏐 Bernard Zell Girls Volleyball Team Shows What it Means to Lead the Way!
Mr. Sheahan, Director of Athletics
As we wrap up the third week of our Middle School athletics season, I wanted to take a moment to share a story that was passed along to me last week—one that really captures the heart of what our girls volleyball program is all about.
As many of you know, our program spans three grades and includes three separate teams. This year, we’re incredibly fortunate to have 36 girls participating—a number that reflects just how much interest and passion there is for the sport. With such a large group, we rely heavily on our 8th graders to lead the way. They've been through the program, and we count on them to set the tone—to show our younger athletes what it truly means to be an EAGLE.
Last week, we saw something special unfold.
A few of our 7th graders took it upon themselves to attend a 6th grade practice—not because they had to, but because they simply wanted more reps. They jumped in willingly and were incredibly helpful, encouraging and guiding the younger girls throughout the session.
Later that same day, two of our 8th graders—girls the younger players really look up to—asked Coach Johnson and Coach Mintz if they could warm up with the 6th grade team. That alone is rare. Eighth grade girls don’t typically ask to share a gym with 6th graders. But what happened next was even more surprising and meaningful.
The 8th grade team followed their lead and left the blue gym to join the 6th graders (alongside the 7th graders) in the red gym. Each 8th grader paired up with a younger teammate, passing with them and teaching fundamentals—how to hold their arms, move their feet, and communicate on the court.
It was a powerful example of leadership, mentorship, and team culture in action—the kind of moment that reminds us why we do what we do.
That same culture—one of connection, hard work, and high standards—has carried into this week across all of our teams.
Our 8th grade volleyball team, made up of girls who haven’t stopped playing since last season (including daily recess volleyball), is off to a 2–0 start. The 7th grade team is also undefeated after strong showings against Rogers Park Montessori School and Lycee Francais. And on Monday, our 6th grade girls played in their very first match — and walked away with a win.
On the soccer field, our Eagles are also 2–0, earning a solid 4–1 victory over the British School. The team is a mix of players coming together for the first time this year, including a core of 7th graders who’ve quickly found a rhythm and identity. Their success so far is a testament to their effort, adaptability, and commitment to each other. Our 6th grade soccer team is hard at work preparing for their season opener, which takes place on September 25—we’re looking forward to seeing them take the field for the first time!
Flag football is still looking for its first win, but don’t let the record fool you—this team has shown steady improvement each game and continues to compete with heart and grit. Each game has been within reach, and the growth has been easy to see.
Our cross country team hasn’t had a meet yet, but they’ve been putting in the work—logging miles and running routes to the lakefront, steadily building their strength and endurance. Their dedication during practice has not gone unnoticed, and we’re excited to see them compete in the coming weeks.
While wins are never the most important thing in middle school sports, they’re a fun byproduct of the effort and investment our student-athletes and coaches have poured into these early weeks. It’s been a strong, spirited start to the season—and we’re excited for what’s ahead.
Finally, a huge thank-you to our coaches—for the time, care, and energy they’ve brought to each team. Their leadership is what makes these early moments of success, growth, and connection possible.
Thanks for continuing to support our athletes, coaches, and teams.
GO Eagles!
