๐ŸŽท Bands Thriving with the โ€œBeltโ€ System
Mr. Mather, Middle School Music
The belt system has become a significant rite of passage for Bernard Zell musicians since its implementation ten years ago. At the beginning of the year, students receive a series of exercises for which they can earn belts upon successful completion. While fostering some healthy competition, the system primarily provides students with clear, achievable goals. Furthermore, it offers an opportunity for specific and ongoing feedback from both Mr. Mather and their peers, facilitating learning and growth. Students are equipped with targeted strategies to utilize this feedback and improve their playing efficiently. These valuable life skills are transferable to any learning environment. The system is designed so that earning a “black belt” signifies substantial work beyond classroom time. This year, we've seen students go above and beyond—submitting videos from home, coming in during recess, and attending music consultancy—to earn their 10th, 15th, 20th, and even 25th-degree black belts! Last week marked our final belt test of the year, concluding another successful year with this impactful system.
