Charone Ousley, 6th Grade Teacher
Our 6th Grade historians have been engaged in their ancient civilizations projects. Using their textbook, World History Great Civilizations: Ancient Through Early Modern Times, as a primary resource, students selected an ancient civilization they were most interested in exploring and researching. Students focused their research and learning on the 7 traits of civilization. These are: stable food supply, government, religion, language, social hierarchy, technology, and arts and culture.
Working with partners, students have been diligently working on their presentations. In 6th grade, teachers are actively guiding students in developing foundational research skills as well as presentation skills. This includes—but is not limited to—accurately citing work, properly researching content, using online resources that are vetted and reliable, practicing presentation skills and working productively and collaboratively with peers. In addition to their projects, students are exploring and reviewing map reading skills and geography.
In order to understand their ancient civilizations more deeply, students are examining where their empires are located physically and politically, and which geographical features have contributed to their rise and success.
