7th-Graders Create Powerful Images Inspired by Keith Haring
Gili Sherman, Middle School Art Teacher

These powerful images were created by 7th-graders before the pandemic, yet, they seem to be addressing events happening right now! As a response to the tragic killing of George Floyd and the ensuing protests all over American cities, images like these can be a call for justice.

This project was inspired by the NYC 1980's subway graffiti artist, Keith Haring, for how art can express social messages. Students addressed topics like racism, global warming, inequality in education and addiction. Through simple cut-paper imagery, our students conveyed the urgency of these issues and urged the viewer to question the status quo. These images also express hopes for tikkun olam. Our students are showing us how the visual arts can be a form of protest. Please take a look at how simple images can often speak volumes!
