While limitations on singing and group movement have presented some challenges for teaching music this year, these new constraints have inspired a revised and unique curriculum for our second-graders! Students just finished seven weeks of world drumming with each learner choosing a specific drum to play throughout the week.

At the beginning of each new week, students chose a different drum to play. We have been focusing on a simplified high school curriculum of world drumming. The students all learned specific drum patterns then played these patterns to several African folksongs, as well as some songs by the Doobie Brothers, Bruno Mars and one from the Lion King.

In this video, you can hear one of the second-grade classes playing three different rhythmic patterns on the hand drums and maracas to a recording of the African song, Funga Alafia.
