1st Grade Inspires and Uplifts with Art!
Shana Ryback, Art Teacher

As the world around us seems to be presenting multiple challenges, from Covid-19 to issues of social justice, all students in art class grades first through eighth will be focusing on sending positive messages of encouragement and unity to our community through public art.

First grade kicked this project off by reading the book Say Something by Peter H. Reynolds. The students discussed different ways they can use their voices to help, uplift and heal those around us. They looked at some examples of how artists use their work to send messages through imagery and written words via paintings, murals, installations and wearable art. They also read the book One by Kathryn Otoshi and talked about how sometimes it only takes one person to stand up and use their voice to inspire others.

The first graders then brainstormed some messages that they felt were important to share, including “believe in yourself,” “we are stronger together,” “we are all equal” and “everyone is awesome!” They used these messages as a jumping-off point for drawings that will be included, along with ideas from the rest of Lower and Middle schools, in a future large-scale mural that will be installed on the wall bordering the Field of Dreams. Students then designed buttons inspired by their mural designs, so that they can wear their messages and spread their positive affirmations wherever they go. Keep your eyes peeled for these uplifting and inspiring buttons when you visit the school campus - the students are so excited to share their messages!
