📖 A Message from Rachel Silverberg, Head of Lower School | September 4, 2024
Rachel Silverberg, Head of Lower School
Dear Lower School families,
It has been an absolutely remarkable first week of school. Our hallways are filled with joyful smiles, excitement about new activities, and a strong sense of community building. Students are deeply engaged in Responsive Classroom practices, including daily morning meetings, visualizing and verbalizing classroom norms, and gathering together in a closing circle to conclude their day. I have had the pleasure of getting to know all of your wonderful children and seeing them gain confidence and trust within their new space, and couldn’t be more excited to see their achievements this year.
In the weeks ahead, our students will begin their new academic journeys through our knowledge-based literacy program, Wit & Wisdom, and our inquiry-based math curriculum, Investigations. Please be sure to ask your students about the texts they are reading, the math games they are playing, and how these activities relate to the world around them!
In Lower School, each grade level focuses on a specific Jewish value throughout the year. First graders study Simchah, or a joyful learning community. Second graders focus on Teshuvah, or thinking about what we do, knowing when to be sorry, and how to make things better. Third graders will hone in on V’ahavta l’rayecha ka’mocha, or loving thy neighbor. Finally, fourth graders address Hachnasat Orchim, or welcoming guests. Students and teachers connect their learning to these values all throughout the year, which will culminate in a special program for each grade level. Please find the dates below, and know that additional details will be forthcoming:
1st Grade: Shabbat Program, May 2
2nd Grade: Siddur Ceremony, May 23
3rd Grade: Synagogue Program, May 9
4th Grade: Siyum, May 30
Of utmost importance to me is ensuring a learning community in which children feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes, and being flexible in their thinking. Together, as a team of students, teachers, families and administration, I look forward to working towards these goals. Thank you in advance for partnering with us to create such a successful and warm environment for our students.
With much gratitude,
Rachel Silverberg, Head of Lower School
