Carly Silverstein, 1st Grade General Studies Teacher
First graders found simcha (joy, our grade-level value) in reading by participating in Mo Madness, a Mo Willems book themed spinoff of March Madness! Students used a bracket to read competing books and vote for their favorite. Each class even had their own Final Four tournament and winner!
Throughout this unit, first graders practiced their decoding and fluency skills, and had various opportunities to extend their text comprehension and writing skills along the way. In connection to our persuasive writing unit, students will be asked to convince each other in writing of who the winner of the playoffs should be! We look forward to culminating this unit with an Elephant and Piggie themed party next week!
