Second Graders Embrace Distance Learning with Hebrew Scavenger Hunt

Dr. Jeff Ellison, 8th-Grade History Teacher

Made possible through a generous gift from the Lucas family, on the 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht, our eighth-grade students were given the opportunity to hear from Rochelle Brown-Rainey, the daughter of Holocaust survivor Magda Brown, last week on the 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht. Rochelle beautifully told her mother’s story and shared photographs with the class. This moving experience will help to launch a year-long interdisciplinary project giving our students the inspiration to begin exploring the past through photography.

With guidance from our own expert faculty and this year's artist-in-residence, Dr. Ann Weiss, our eighth-grade students will interpret and analyze photos of Holocaust survivors, then research and interview the families of those pictured. This project will culminate in a virtual exhibit showcasing survivors as well as what the students learned about their own lives and cultural histories. Click here to listen to the conversation with Dr. Jeff Ellison and Dr. Ann Weiss for more on this year's 8th-grade year-long project.
