Rena Citrin, Library Director

Last week marked the third award ceremony for the Sylvia G. Gordon Award for Excellence in Children's Literature at Bernard Zell! Mrs. Gordon is a dear friend and supporter of our school who founded the Bernard Zell library more than 50 years ago and continues to support it to this day. By naming this award for Mrs. Gordon, we recognize her longstanding contribution to Bernard Zell and her love for children's books.

Brian Lies, the 2019 Sylvia S. Gordon Award for Excellence in Picture Book Literature winner, was in residence last week at school. Lies is the author and illustrator of the extraordinary picture book, The Rough Patch, which also won the Caldecott Award. Several 5th and 6th-grade art classes were fortunate to have Lies teach them a particular drawing technique with powdered graphite.

The day concluded with a multi-grade assembly with Lies led by Noa B., Noah K., Eytan L. and Ariel G. The 2020 Gordon Award winner, voted upon by students, was announced to great acclaim. Leslea Newman, author of Gittle’s Journey: An Ellis Island Story will be in residence next year.
