EC Students Discover More About Themselves with Self-Portraits

Tami Mizrachi, Nursery Teacher

For the last couple of weeks, Nursery B students have been creating self-portraits through a variety of methods (the 100 languages of learning). This self-portrait unit is in preparation for a deeper study of their families and the world around them. The students have:

  • Examined themselves a bit deeper by creating self-portraits through a variety of materials. The teachers explained the process and watched to see how the students would interpret it for themselves, as they gave them a “tour” of their work.

  • Created their clay self-portraits by manipulating clay to mold their facial features, while looking at a photo of themselves.

  • Looked at themselves in our table mirrors, using the mirror as a reference and traced their features using dry erase markers.

  • Used black sharpies and white paper and encouraged to focus on and share the details they noticed of themselves that make them unique.

  • Colored in their self-portrait black and white picture with oil pastels or paint, reminiscent of Andy Warhol's pop art.
