The Bernard Zell community is invited to join together for a live challah baking class this Thursday evening, hosted by Early Childhood Jewish Studies Leader, Hagit Lewis, and led by Bernard Zell parent and chef pâtissier, Sharon Shay.

We can’t wait to see everyone’s homemade challahs when we gather together again this Friday evening to say motzi and all of the Shabbat blessings together!

So that you’re prepared to bake right along with us, make sure you have the following on hand:

  • 8 cups flour 
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp yeast 
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup oil (canola or vegetable)
  • 1/4 cup honey 
  • 1 & 1/2 cups warm water
  • oven sheet tray
  • parchment paper 
  • mixing bowl or kitchen aid
  • measuring cups and spoons 
  • plastic wrap 
  • rolling pin

Chef Pâtissier Sharon Shay

Pastry Chef Sharon Shay was born in Marseille, France. Growing up with her grandmother nearby, teaching her all the Jewish traditions and food, Sharon was always coming up with new and creative twists on timeless food and desserts. Inspired by both her Mother and Grandmother and driven to learn more French Classical techniques, Sharon moved to Chicago with her husband and attended Le Cordon Blue. After completing her Patisserie and Baking Degree she resumed more education in Paris and perfected the French macaron and family recipe, while also adding her own spin. In 2014, she started her own company, France Macarons. At home she still believes that keeping the tradition that she got from her grandmother and mom are important to pass it to her little family. She’s a proud mom to three kids at school, Daniel 7th grade, Ariel 6th grade and Ella 3rd grade.
