The Sylvia G. Gordon Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature was created and administered by the library and is a curricular collaboration between the library, the 6th-grade humanities teachers and Middle School visual arts teachers.

This project provides our students the opportunity to closely examine exemplary picture books, practice reading skills, critical thinking and experience the magical combination of words and pictures on the page. This year, in visual arts, our 6th-grade students worked in pairs to distill the main concept from their chosen book and created a glazed ceramic art piece that conveys the author’s message and celebrates the book’s wit or beauty.

We hope you enjoy these beautiful collaborative pieces made by Bernard Zell students!
