Our third day in Washington, D.C., was packed with history, honor, and even a few haunts. First, we admired the Jefferson Memorial, where students read some of Thomas Jefferson’s inspiring words carved into the walls. Next, we visited the historic Ford’s Theatre, the site where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. A National Park Service Ranger gave a fascinating talk, helping students understand not just the tragic events of that night, but also Lincoln’s profound impact on America. Afterward, we headed to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, a museum that quickly captivated the students with its powerful exhibits on slavery and civil rights, as well as its vibrant celebrations of African American achievements in sports, music, and culture.

After lunch, students had a once-in-a-lifetime experience: meeting Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi! As we waited on the steps, we witnessed firsthand the hustle and bustle of Capitol Hill as legislators came and went. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi spent several valuable minutes talking to the students about his role and answering their questions. As an added bonus, students also met the Congressman's Staff Assistant and Legislative Correspondent, Sadie Aeder, who is a Bernard Zell alumna. Her presence was a great addition to our visit to the Hill. She connected with the students and made the experience particularly meaningful!

The remainder of the afternoon was dedicated to honoring those who have served our country. We began at Arlington National Cemetery, where we watched the somber and beautiful Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Students also visited the gravesites of President John F. Kennedy and other American heroes, reflecting on the profound sacrifices made for our country. Next, we visited the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, which honors the Marines who have given their lives in service.

After a delicious pizza dinner, we traveled to Old Town Alexandria for a Ghost and Graveyard Tour! With lanterns lighting our way, we walked through cobblestone streets and learned some of the spooky (and sometimes funny) legends of Alexandria’s past.
