PCRC COVID 19 Testing ResourceS

Below are FAQs regarding COVID 19. Always contact your physician with specific questions pertaining to your health.

Students with COVID 19 symptoms or exposure should stay home from school until test results are known and/or clearance to return to school is provided by a physician.

Who should get tested?

Anyone who has COVID 19 symptoms
Anyone who is exposed* to someone with confirmed COVID 19

*Exposure is defined by the CDC as an encounter within 6’ for more than 15 minutes, starting from 48 hours before symptom onset or specimen collection of a confirmed diagnosis. Depending on the encounter, not all such interactions will qualify as close contact. Mitigating factors may include whether the encounter was outside; on the other hand direct contact (such as a sneeze) may qualify even if less than 15 minutes.

When should I get tested?

What are the different tests for COVID-19?

Molecular tests - RT-PCR
- Nasal or throat swab that detects the virus genetic material
- Results may take up to a week
- Typically highly accurate
Antigen tests
- Nasal or throat swab that detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus
- Results may be rapid
- Higher chance of missing an active infection so your doctor may order a molecular test to confirm
- Antigen Saliva Test
  - New research is showing promise with Saliva testing
  - Newly approved by the FDA at home saliva test (Stay Tuned!)
Antibody tests
- NOT A DIAGNOSTIC TEST;
- Indicates recent/past infection
- At this time, it is unclear the clinical significance

Do I have to quarantine for 14 days if I come from a hot spot, but test negative for COVID-19?

Requirements: Screening questionnaire to determine eligibility for testing. Currently not testing asymptomatic children even if they have contact with a COVID + individual

COVID-19 PCR Test: Results available in 48-72 hours on average

*Lurie’s only offers testing to individuals 18 and under; Adults can contact Northwestern Memorial Hospital for testing information at the COVID HOTLINE: 312.47COVID

*Parent tip: You may be able to get results sooner if your private pediatrician has access to the Lurie’s Electronic Medical Record check for results after 24 hours

*Most insurance is accepted; Self pay $250 for televisit and COVID 19 PCR test; Rapid test is an additional $150 (optional, but may not be covered by insurance; unlikely to be covered if asymptomatic)
