At Bernard Zell, students learn more than just reading, writing, and math. We believe in the power of experiential learning and bringing education to life. That is exactly why we created the Behind the Fence Club. The Behind the Fence Club, led by Lower School faculty member Benje Casper and Catherine Solecki from Bulley & Andrews, met monthly on Friday afternoons in the construction trailer. At these meetings, the students learned first-hand from architects, engineers, and building contractors about the building process! They heard about each of the different trades, walked through the site, viewed the time-lapse footage of the building, and followed the process step-by-step.

“I joined the Behind the Fence Club because I thought it would be cool to see the building progress over time and learn about working in a construction site.”
- Madeline M. ‘23

“What I am most excited about is the design of the new building because I like how the windows are shaped and the windows remind me of the Chicago skyline.”
- Reah K. ‘23

“I am most excited about the additional small group workspaces and writable walls because it increases ways to learn and adds a new level of fun to our classes.”
- Gabe C. ‘21

“My favorite thing we have done in Behind the Fence Club was when we went up to the second floor and touched both buildings. We had our feet on the new building and our hands on the existing building.”
- Noah S. ‘23
