Meet and Welcome Bernard Zell's 2022-23 Shinshinim from Israel
  • Jewish Life
Rachel Jury, Director of Jewish Studies
Bernard Zell, in collaboration with The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and The iCenter, is thrilled to welcome Eitam and Lihi, two talented 18-year-old Israelis to Chicago for the 2022-23 academic year. We’re so pleased to announce that two of them have joined the Bernard Zell community!
Shinshinim are charismatic 18-year-old Israelis who engage and enrich the lives of students, their peers and the broader community. Shinshin is an acronym for sh’nat she’rut, a year of service. This group of Israelis has graduated high school and delayed their army service in order to serve as volunteer educators in communities around the world.
Chicago’s shinshinim are highly motivated and dedicated individuals representing the best of their generation in Israel. Throughout the academic year, they’ll take on active roles in our school and will facilitate fun and engaging activities and programs related to contemporary Israeli culture, holidays and Hebrew language.
If you'd like to send Bernard Zell's shinshinim a welcome note, we encourage you to email shinshinim@bernardzell.org!

Shinshinim Spotlight: Meet Roman
Hello! My name is Roman, I’m 17 from Holon, a city just outside Tel Aviv. My family came from Russia in 1999, and so I’m the only one born and raised in Israel. During high school I was very active in the youth movement “Maccabi Tzair,” being a madrich for both eighth and third grades. I was also head of student body for a few years in a row. I’m excited for a year of activity and fun, to get to know the community and bring a small pice of me to it. I love swimming, watching Netflix and I’m a huge marvel fan.
Fun fact: I’m fluent in Hebrew, English and Russian!
Shinshinim Spotlight: Meet Nitzan
Nitzan lives in Nir Hen in the south of Israel and majored in chemistry and physics in high school. She is an alumnus of the Diller Teen Fellows program in partnership with the Chicago Jewish community and last year she was a JC in the same program. Nitzan also has years of experience as a madrich in her local youth movement. Nitzan also loves traveling all around the world and hanging out with her friends.
Shinshinim Spotlight: Meet Ido
Hi guys! My name is Ido a Megidish, I’m almost 18 (just in two days!) and I’m from Kiryat Gat. I’m really excited to work with everyone and spend time with you all. I hope I’ll get to know more people and have interesting conversations with everyone.
My favorite thing to do is to hang out with my friends, go to restaurants together and just spend time with my friends. Can't wait to meet you all!
Shinshinim Spotlight: Meet Nir
My name is Nir Horev I’m 18 years old and I’m from Herzliya. I can’t wait to work with the school and have a meaningful year with you. In my free time, I like to practice karate, cook, bake with my family and friends and play sports.
I was a counselor in the Israeli scouts for three years and I really liked the trips, the friends and the opportunities we had there.
I also was in a program that combines working with Jewish teenagers from the US and I fell in love with the connection between the Jewish communities abroad and in Israel.
